| Even before WWII began, Hitler had a fascination with power and the occult. Upon visiting the Treasure House of the Hofsburg Museum in Austria, he noted an ancient spear on display, the Spear of Longinus, or the Spear of Destiny. The spear is rumored to have been the Spear that was used by Longinus at the site of Crucifixion of Christ to pierce His side after He had died, at which water and blood flowed out. Further, the nail the pierced his feet was allegedly inserted within the Spear. Its legend grew into the Spear having a sort of 'black' power and while it is sometimes called the "Sacred" or Holy Spear, there have through history been those vying for international power who have believed the legends, most notably that whoever was in possession of the spear would conquer successfully and stay in power. The first reported owner of the spear (prior to its coupling with the nail) was Herod the Great (who may have handed it down to Longinus). Other owners have included Otto, Charlemagne, Napoleon and most recently, Hitler. While the Spear, like the Shroud of Turin, is questionably in the realm of legend, the beliefs about it are very real: chiefs of state throughout centuries have believed that the Spear (stained by the Blood of Christ) made one invincible, even though it was a Roman who pierced His side and a Roman who pierced His feet, Charlemagne (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) thought it protected him. Believing that the “Blood of Christ” shed upon such a relic will give the one possessing it an unfair advantage with regard to military and political might is a perversion of faith and an act of sorcery.
